ST. JAMES CATHOLIC SCHOOL IS UNIQUE

SJCS is a mission driven school. Everything that you experience at St. James flows directly in correlation with our school mission statement, “Preparing Minds for a Lifetime and Souls for Eternity.” In fact, it’s not only our mission, but the way we live.

1. Less than 3% of our students qualified for Title I Reading/Math Services from the public schools in 2005-2006.
2. That students in grades kdg-6th receive instruction in the following subjects: English,Religion, Reading, Human Sexuality, Math, Spelling, Penmanship, Science, Social Studies, Phonics, Music, P.E., Art and Technology.
3. 93% of our students in the second and fifth grades scored above the national average on the IOWA TESTS OF BASIC SKILLS ACHIEVEMENT TESTS during the 2006-2007 school year.
4. Our AYP score was 95% Proficient for NCLB requirements and we need to be at 100% by 2014.
5. St. James earned Building Standard of Excellence for Writing and Science in 2004. In 2006 and 2007, we also earned Building Standard of Excellence for Math, Reading, and Writing in grades 3, 4 and 5. In 2008, we achieved Standard of Excellence in Science, Math, and Reading. In 2009, we achieved Standard of Excellence in Reading, Math, and Science.
6. All the teachers in kindergarten through sixth, P.E. and music, possess state certification as elementary teachers.
7. SJCS is one of the top performing schools academically in the Diocese of Wichita. We tied for 6th place academically as a school out of 38 Diocesan schools.
8. Students of St. James participated in Jump Rope for Heart, Spelling Bee, Religion Bowl, Knight of Columbus Poster Contest, Food for the Poor, Coat and Mitten Drive, Band, Principal’s Reading Program, McMath Program, Pizza Hut “Book It” Program, May Crowning, Catholic Schools Week, Contribute to Missions and Charities throughout the year, Letters to Seminarians, Science Fair, Read-A-Thon, Adopt A Family at Christmas time, Readings and Responses at Mass, Diocesan Battle of the Books Program, Religion Quiz Bowl, Adopt Residents at the LakePoint Nursing Home, Little House on the Prairie Book Club and Little Flower Club for Girls in K-6th.
9. That St. James Catholic School was recognized for meeting the “Standard of Excellence” in Mathematics at the 4th grade level for eight years in a row.
10. That the Diocese of Wichita recognized SJCS as a “Catholic School of Excellence” for its accomplishments on the Kansas Assessments. We were one of six schools out of 37 in the diocese to receive this award in 2003.
11. SJCS was one of 37 schools in the diocese that had perfect ratings of Exemplary. St.James led the four schools with 9 Exemplary ratings in 2003.
12. SJCS scored an “EXEMPLARY” rating by the Diocese of Wichita in 2005 for Reading Grade 5, Math Grade 4, Science Grade 4, Social Science Grade 4, and STEWARD Religion Test in Grades 3 and 5. We scored EXEMPLARY again in 2006 for Reading in Grades 3-5, Math in Grades 3-5 and Religion in Grades 3-5. In 2007, St. James scored Exemplary in Reading, Math, and Writing for Grade 3-5. In Religion, 3rd and 5th grades scored Exemplary. St. James scored Exemplary in all subject areasand grade levels in 2008. St. James scored Exemplary in all grades for Science, Math,3rd and 4th grade Reading, and 3rd grade Religion for 2009.
13. St. James fifth grade won first place in the Religion Scholar Bowl in Hutchinson in 2004-2005, 2005-2006, second place in the 2006-2007 school year, first place in 2007-2008, and second place in 2008-2009 school year.
15. Second through fifth grades were given the I.T.B.S. achievement tests. All of these grade levels scored above the 80th percentile.
16. ST. JAMES CATHOLIC SCHOOL WAS ONE OF 44 SCHOOLS OUT OF NEARLY 1,000 PUBLIC, PRIVATE, AND PAROCHIAL SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF KANSAS THAT RECEIVED THE GOVERNOR’S BUILDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN THE 2006-2007 SCHOOL YEAR. YOU HAD TO BE IN THE TOP 5% OF THE SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF KANSAS.
