Music Notes

The joy of music is alive and well at St. James.  Students in Grades K through 5, meet for a 30-minute music class twice a week, with Pre – K students participating in a 20-minute class, once a week.  Fifth grade students are also offered the option of joining the band program taught through the Augusta Public Schools.  Students who decide to join the band, meet for a 30-minute band class each day, as well as their general music classes twice a week.

Along with the MacMillan music textbooks, Music and You, updated materials are also provided through our yearly subscription to the Music K-8 resource magazine.  Five issues per year, supply 25 new songs complete with CD accompaniments and students’ parts, not to mention a network for sharing an abundance of new ideas and products.

Some of our yearly musical highlights include:

·        An inclusive all-school Christmas Program

·        Two trips to the Wichita Symphony, Young People’s concerts for grades 3, 4, and 5

·        Periodic visits to Lakepoint Retirement Home, which borders our school

Materials are presented in a positive atmosphere, combined with movement and fun. They are designed to lead students to a true understanding of the elements necessary to read music, while also allowing them to experience many musical styles.  Such experiences will lead to a lifelong love of music.
